On Saturday, September 25, 2021, the City of Sebastopol Climate Action Committee hosted an organic compost giveaway. Over 80 home gardening households and Brook Haven School Garden were the happy recipients of the free organic compost. This free event was compliments of the City of Sebastopol Climate Action Committee, Zero Waste Sonoma, and Napa Recycling and Waste Services. 40 cubic yards of fresh compost was delivered to the parking lot of the Youth Annex of the Community Center and in less than 4 hours the compost had been scooped up by the grateful gardeners and loaded in containers and pickup trucks.
“THANK YOU for the compost today! What a great treat and opportunity to help the planet and our gardens!!!!” Cathy, Sebastopol, Master Gardener.
The Climate Action Committee chose to host a compost giveaway as a part of an effort to improve soil health which in turn helps to mitigate the climate trends we are experiencing. The benefits of organic compost are many, including replenishing the soil microorganisms and organic matter, boosting plant nutrients, pulling carbon out of the atmosphere and into the soil, and improving water absorption and retention, an important feature in times of heavy infrequent rains and droughts. Compost is also an important way to recycle organic resources and conserve landfill space.
This is the first of many events to come, don't miss out! Join the Climate Action community.
